Honoree
Wilhelm Turnier - (Wilo)
Born
on April 5, 1937. He
grew up in Port-au-Prince. He was Hector Riobé's
best friend and he became very active with Hector in
a group that had participated in a military action against
Francois
Duvalier's gorvernment.
He was arrested at his house in July 1963. He endured
his interrrogation with courage and pride. He was sent
to Fort-Dimanche to die. His three brothers, Jean Claude,
Webert Jr. and Lesly who was 12 years old were also
arrested and sent to Fort-Dimanche.. Jean Claude was
placed in the same cell than Wilhelm and recalled the
last moment spent with him and he remembered that Wilo
was very firm and very courageous, and had no regret
about being in Fort-Dimanche on death row. He was ready
to accept death with pride and dignity for having opposed
the retrograde regime of Duvalier. Jean Claude was released
shortly thereafter with Webert Jr. and Lesly. Wilhelm
was never to be seen again. He was allegedly executed
in September 1963 |
